"The UK SpeedTrap Guide"

2008 - All you want to know.....

Defensive Equipment Tests.
This Page covers equipment that I have been sent and with the help of a few friends (inc. Police) we put under test, and we will give you our views on the products, not the salesman's views. Not all manufactures of equipment want us to test their equipment, wonder why...? So all not all the equipment on the market may be tested.
If you have any equipment you have bought and you want to send us your views on how well it works or doesn't for that, let us know.
Send your review or comments

NOVUS Delta
Speed Camera and Safety Warning System

The NOVUS delta is another product from NOVUS Systems and is their starter unit for GPS camera warnings and safety warnings. This simple to use unit is powered by 12-24 volts and sits on your dashboard via their universal magnetic mount. Once again as with all the NOVUS products it feels well built and offers some great features and is provided with the data pre-installed ready for use..

In the box you get the NOVUS Delta, with all of its data pre-installed, so its ready to use, 2.5m power lead, spare fuse, cable ties and wire clamps for fitting (cable ties and wire clamps only need to be used if you wish) magnetic mount, USB update cable and an instruction guide.

This unit again uses a high sensitivity Sirf Star III GPS Engine to give you maximum signal, it can also output the NMEA information should you wish to use the GPS data for another device.

The sensitivity was good enough to get a signal in our office.

On the unit there are the following.. Power socket 12-24v, Mode selection switch (for Camera mode or Normal mode and Download mode), Volume control, Menu button, User button, Data port and LED display.

The LED display is clear and easy to see in day or night. Voice alerts are clear and little distortion is given at full volume. Speaker is on the top and there is more than enough volume for a noisy environment.

In use its simple, in the Normal mode you will get all the warnings, cameras and safety warnings along with a voice announcement for the time on the hour and fatigue warning after 2 hours driving, suggesting you take a rest.

In the Camera mode you wont get any safety warnings only warnings about speed traps.

The warnings start with a voice announcement indicating the type of site you are approaching, then the speed limit for that site and then the distance to the site. In most cases the warning will happen at least 500 yards away. The speed limit will flash up on the right of the display and the count down distance left on the left of the display. You also get a chime when you get closer to the site. If you are still over the speed limit the Delta will make another voice announcement asking you to reduce speed. Once the site is passed you get an all clear chime.

You can add and delete sites as you wish.

The NOVUS Delta offers road profiling this removes false alerts by using a two position activation method, using an initial activation point and camera location. Novus Alpha will only generate a warning when a vehicle passes an activation point and is driving towards the camera. Should a vehicle be driving from the opposite direction, the vehicle will not pass the activation point and no false alarm will be raised. If the driver joins from a side road after the activation point, then Novus Alpha senses the direction of travel and compares it with the direction of the speed camera and activation point and warns the driver of a speed camera ahead if driving in the direction of the camera.

The NOVUS Delta will warn or show the following

  • Warnings of fixed camera monitoring
    systems - Gatso, Truvleo, SPECS,
    Speedmaster and DS2
  • Warning of red light cameras
  • Warning of possible mobile sites
  • Warning of accident black spots
  • Timed warning of congestion charging zone
  • Additional journey information
    including compass, average speed,
    maximum speed, elapsed time and
    odometer
  • SOS positioning feature providing
precise GPS location in the event
    of breakdown or emergency

Changing settings is done via the Menu and User buttons on the top of the NOVUS Delta. Depending on if you are moving or not when you press the Menu button you will get different results. Pressing the Menu button when stationary you get, Date, Number of GPS satellites tracked, Time. User button gives no result. Each display will show for 10 seconds and then revert back to the main screen.

Pressing the Menu button when moving gives you the time. The user button will add or delete a location.

Updating the unit is simple using the provided USB cable. First time users need to download the update installer then once that has been installed on your PC, return to their website and download the updates. They offer free lifetime updates.

Can we recommend it, YES, we can.

This is a great unit for £89

Using the Novus Delta is simple.
This is an ideal unit to sit next to your Satellite Navigation unit to give you good reliable camera and safety warnings something the Satellite Navigation makers do badly to say the least.

What do we like. What don't we like.
  • It's simplicity in use
  • It's performance and range of warnings
  • Clear voice alerts
  • Road and Vehicle profiling
  • Free Lifetime updates
  • Very informative Instructions
  • Simple mount
  • 2 Year warranty
  • Long power Cord
  • Great Price

  • We haven't found anything apart from the lack of a remote antenna connection. This will not be a problem unless you have a vehicle with all round UV coated glass (quite rare)
    (
We have now tested all the NOVUS products behind UV glass, in the foot well in the radio cubby hole and found the units to have no problem in getting a signal)
